When was the last time that you saw a politician asked to denounce a religious leader with whom he or she was associated?

For generations, we have seen a succession of presidents, from both political parties, under the wing of the Rev. Billy Graham.

Historians have recently reported that Graham and his Oval Office acolytes have spoken in racist and xenophobic terms about both Blacks and Jews.

The Green Party Platform : Ecological and Energy Sustainability

The human community is an element of the Earth community, not the other way around. All human endeavors are situated within the dynamics of the biosphere. If we wish to have sustainable institutions and enterprises, they must fit well with the processes of the Earth.

The ideology of industrialism, in both capitalist and communist countries, insists that modern society lives on top of nature and should rightly use and despoil the rest of the natural world as we desire—because any loss of the ecosystems is merely an externality” in economic thought and because any problems can be addressed later by a technological fix. We are now living through the painful consequences of that arrogant, ignorant perspective. Many of our children suffer from accumulations of mercury and other toxins in their neurological systems, environmentally related cancer is on the rise, and our air and water are increasingly polluted. Meanwhile, our ecosystems are being compromised by the spreading presence of genetically engineered organisms.

The Hollis F. Price Middle College High School is undoubtedly a successful school. As a collaboration between the Memphis school district and LeMoyne-Owen College, it provides an opportunity for gifted African-American students to earn credits towards their college degrees while still in high school. And by selecting only 150 of the district’s best students, it avoids many of the problems that plague public schools: fighting, truancy, and falling educational standards.

David Doonan was considering a run for public office last year, but not necessarily for Mayor. But when then Mayor Chris McCormick, was quoted in the local paper as saying "things are easier to get done when the public doesn't show up"

Doonan knew he had to run. "That was really the turning point for me". Doonan said, "People felt like they were shut out of the process, that decisions were being made without public input".

April 22—Several students and workers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are entering the sixth day of a sit-in in Chancellor James Moeser’s lobby, the longest sit-in at UNC since 1993. About 25 students and workers entered the administration building on April 17 and have been occupying it ever since.

Brand names such as Nike and Adidas are currently partnered with UNC to make apparel bearing the “Carolina” name. These brands source the apparel from factories all over the world and have been paying increasingly lower prices for the apparel.

M ay 1st International Workers' Day will see significant actions by union workers against the war in Iraq. The most significant action will be taken by the dockworkers in San Francisco. Their decision to stop work on May 1st to express their opposition to the war in Iraq is a profound action. In a year in which Republicans and Democrats continue to promote policies that will prolong the war, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is representing the opposition of a majority of people in the United States to the war.

The ILWU’s resolution calls for support from other segments of labor. "That it is time to take labor’s protest to a more powerful level of struggle by calling on unions and working people in the U. S. and internationally to mobilize for a 'No Peace No Work Holiday' May 1, 2008 for 8 hours to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U. S. troops from the Middle East and that a clarion call from the ILWU be sent with an urgent appeal for unity of action to the AFL-CIO, the Change to Win Coalition and all of the international labor organizations to which we are affiliated to bring an end to this bloody war once and for all."

North Carolina Ballot Access History

North Carolina ranks as the 3rd worst state in the nation for open ballot access.

This means third parties and candidates are essentially kept out of elections. A simple solution is to reduce the number of signatures required to gain ballot access – a step many other states have already taken.

Bill Gates has called for "creative capitalism" - that is a philanthropy spurred on by profit. But Galés Gabirondo unmasks creative capitalism to reveal it as philanthro-capitalism. She uses the Bill Gates/Rockeffeler initiative, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, to show just how devastating it can be when good-will meets a corporate driven and market hungry capitalism.

In September 2006, the Bill & MelindaGates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation teamed up to launch “AGRA” a $150 million Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa.

Paper Ballots and Audits in Time for Election Day 2008!

Tell Your Congressional Rep. to Vote for HR 5036 "The Emergency Election Assistance for Secure Elections Act"

Americans need to be able to trust the counting of the vote on Election Day. Paperless electronic voting is rife with computer mistakes and security problems. Only 17 states have a voter verified paper record and require an audit. With no paper record it is impossible to audit the vote and we cannot be sure the vote was counted accurately. Peace voters can only have an impact if we are sure our votes are counted as they are cast.

Digging below the surface of this crisis

Have you lost your job?

Are you in danger of getting kicked out of your house or rental unit because of the mortgage crisis?

Do you work full time but keep falling behind on your bills?

Do you find it impossible to balance health care needs with the cost of everything else—from food, transportation and education to just trying to get a little enjoyment out of life?

Don’t beat yourself up. It’s not because you did something wrong.

You have plenty of company. Many tens of millions in this country are really suffering. Your problems are not personal. Even if you did everything “right”—struggled to get an education and job skills, struggled to find full-time work, struggled to be pleasant and agreeable on your job even when you were justifiably angry over conditions—you could still be in the same boat.
