Washington DC Peace March
(-Fri & Sat- September 23 - 24, 2005)
I got to hang out with fellow DUers, march for peace and see DC. A great way to spend a weekend!

The night before the protest, I got to meet two of the founders of my favorite website: DemocraticUnderground. "Skinner" is the guy on the left, I'm in the middle and "EarlG", the Englishman sophisticated enough to drink beer from a pint-glass, is on the right. |
A friend of mine pointed out this WWI poster in a DC bar to me. At one time, citizens were expected to make sacrifices in time of war. The text reads: "Just set the clock AHEAD One Hour Uncle -- No longer working day for anybody - but all of it in daylight. Use this EXTRA HOUR of daylight for your country." Can you imagine the political fallout if Bush asked Americans to dedicate an hour a day to their country for the Iraqi War? It isn't that Americans are less patriotic today, it's just that the Iraqi War isn't worth personal sacrifice, unless you are working to END the conflict. This is why the Peace Marches are so huge, and the pro-war marches only get a few dozen people. |
DUers
met under this banner for the march. Once they were all gathered together
I volunteered to take everyone's camera and start taking pictures. |
The Labor folks had cool chants: "We are the Union! The mighty, mighty Union! Go Union! GO UNION!!!" |
Code Pink had cool chants: "Halliburton,
Kellogg, Brown and Root, (BTW: I love Code Pink. They are some of the most fun, and most effective organizers I've ever seen.) |
DU chants sucked. All we had was: "We're DU. We don't stink! Woo-Hoo!" We DUers are solitary cyber-activists types. Getting us to chant was like getting cats to march in single file. |
This was, by far, my favorite display of the protest. The devil controls Cheney, and Cheney controls the boy-king George W. Bush. |
I failed to get a good picture of the devil's face. The actor playing satan maintained a huge, flamboyant grin throughout the whole march. It must have taken him a lot of energy to stay in character for so long. |
This
is one of the Veterans For Peace "Impeachment Tour" busses. |
This
sticker was on the back of the bus. |
The protesters from Latin America had the most raw-energy of any group. I'm not a fan of Che, communists shouldn't be used as heroes, but this banner was rather impressive. |
Just so you don't think I took this picture: It was emailed to be by a female friend who thought it was great. To conservatives who will fake fun of these women: Grow up. These ladies have more guts than you do. They risked arrest for a noble cause while you call for others to die from the safety of your couch. Go join the infantry and fight, you cowards! Then you will have earned the right to sneer at these people. |
Even though the man who occupies the White House is a thug, I still got goosebumbs of joy when I saw it. |
I
think this is the Justice Building. |
This isn't, strictly speaking, a protest picture. It's part of an exhibit on the Hirshhorn Museum. It reads "Don't be afraid" in different languages. George Bush's policies are only possible as long as the American people are kept in a constant state of fear. Peace Activists have not forgotten 9/11, but unlike cowardly conservatives, we are brave enough to work for peace in the face of evil. |
