Asheville Peace Rally
March 20, 2005
March 20th marked the second anniversary of the US-lead invasion of Iraq. The WNC Peace coalition organized this peace rally to commemorate this sad event. About 1200 people showed up. (When I have the "official" count I'll update this site)

Description |
City-County
park is so named because it's located in front of the Asheville City
Hall (That's the building on the right.) and the Buncombe County Seat.
(That's the building on the left.) |
|
Having
the City Hall in the backdrop was a silent reminder that if you want
to change policies on a global level, you must first plug in on the
local level. |
|
The
rally attracted a wide demographic, age and income wise, but very few
blacks and hispanics attended. White pro-peace activists have to start
figuring out how to reach minorities and make them feel welcome. (Note:
It's not that anyone makes them feel unwelcome. It's sometimes difficult
to reach out beyond your own social circle.) |
|
The
WNC Peace Coalition did a great job organizing this event. Many times
protest organizers forget that people need to be entertained as well
as educated. The WNC people did NOT make this mistake. (BTW: The woman
playing the bass is Robin. She is running for city council.) |
|
Carrie,
a well-known local poet, brought the house down with her work. She is
famous in Asheville for her stage presence and outstanding writing. |
|
Andy,
the guy holding the sign, didn't know that John, the colorful character
in the back, was helping to make this a great picture. |
|
Puppets
for Peace organizes puppet-shows with a peace-theme. I was told they
have hundreds of these puppets. |

|
War
doesn't only kill people, as these actors demonstrate. |
|
War
kills truth, life, plants, animals, trees and whole families |
|
"1521"
is the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq as of March 20th, 2005. |

These
Ashevillians are working hard to make sure that the children in the
above picture don't get added to the death toll. |
|
Barry,
the guy holding the pole, made this Banner. Barry has made many banners
for various causes and he's rather good at it. |

|
Kendall,
the woman pictured here, made the sign she is holding just before the
invasion two years ago. I pray that she will not need this poster next
year. |
|
| Note: The rally ended with a march to the "Jubilee!" Church in downtown Asheville. I had to go home early to finish a project for work that I procrastinated doing and was due the next day. | |
