The Blog Post Before Christmas

Paul -V-'s picture

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house,
only the blogger was stirring, with his keyboard and mouse.
A six-pack of coke sat by the computer with care,
Along with empty pizza-boxes and snacks near the chair.

The blogger was wrestling with himself in his head,
He needed to write a post for Christmas before going to bed.
Alas, despite putting on his best thinking cap,
It was as if his brain had just settled for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
he sprang from the screen to see what was the matter.
Away to the window he flew like a flash,
closing his bathrobe securely with a sash.

Global warming had melted the previous day's snow
so it was easy to see the objects below.
When, what to his wondering eyes should appear,
But a group of friendly internet icons in a sleigh pulled by deer.

With them was a guy dressed in red, so lively and quick,
the blogger knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
The others he recognized as closer they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Hey Reddit! now, Hi Digg! now, MySpace and Flickr!
Hello, del.icio.us! and Slashdot, and YouTube and MetaFilter!
Come in from the cold! no need to stall!
Come on in, come on in, come on in all!

They walked into the house and YouTube brewed chi.
Digg and Reddit played Nintendo Wii, Slashdot just got high.
Flickr took some photos of the whole Christmas scene,
and St. Nick asked MySpace for advice on how to meet girls who are 18.

MetaFilter, Del.icio.us and the blogger drank some beer.
Everyone in the house was filled with good Christmas cheer.
It was like a well-moderated forum where trolls are quickly banned,
Positive vibes and happiness spread across the land.

Then Santa said: "It's time for presents! Let me check my pack."
He looked like a peddler, just opening his sack.
The internet characters all started to gather around,
looking forward to the gifts to be soon handed down.

Digg was first with a present, he received a new shovel.
Flicker was second, she got direct access to Hubble.
Reddit got a signed book from the famous Richard Dawkins.
MetaFilter got a batch of marijuana brownies to understand Stephen Hawking.

Slashdot got the head of an RIAA lawyer, all wrapped in a box.
Del.icio.us got a set of keys and a collection of locks.
YouTube got a DVD of Star Trek - the episode that features a Gorn,
My Space also got a DVD - it was all about porn.

The blogger received a new bathrobe, but even better than that:
He knew he would blog about the party that had just occurred in his flat.
Meeting the internet icons had renewed his creative side,
Ideas for future posts would come easily, he now realized.

"And now" announced Santa, "let's go to the next bloggers pad!"
So the icons piled back into the sleigh, all happy and glad.
The whole neighborhood heard them exclaim, as they drove out of sight,
"Happy Holidays to all, and to all a good-night!"

You and I Poem

Paul -V-'s picture

Once a month, Brainshrub.com gets dedicated to poetry and haiku.

This month instead of my own work, I'd like to share with you one of the poems that got me interested in poetry in the first place. It's called: "You and I"

Follow this hyperlink to hear it:

http://media.odeo.com/2/0/9/iyou.mp3

Here are the verses:

You and I

Only one I in the whole wide world, and millions and millions of you.

But - every you is an I unto himself and I am a you to you too.

But - if you are an I and I am a you and the opposite also is true, it makes us both the same somehow

Yet splits us each in two.

It's more and more mysterious the more I think it through:

Every you every where in the world is an I. Every I in the world is a you.

As usual, your own poetry is welcome in the comments.

Note: Special thanks to Patty who found the author of this poem. I could have sworn I had this thing memorized since grade school, and my initial Google search came up empty.

November 2006 Haiku post

Paul -V-'s picture

It's been months since I've done a haiku post, so here it goes:

Drinking Liberally

Drinking Liberally
Political wonks gone wild.
Beer and politics.

.

54 degrees

Fifty four degrees.
Cold enough for a sweater,
Warm enough to jog.

Errands

Our day to day life
Summarized in one small phrase:
"We've all got errands".

.

I'd love to read your poetry and haiku. Leave some in the comments.
