Book Review: "Wait! Don't Move To Canada!"

There is a book every liberal political blogger should read, it's got the slightly unfortunate title of: "Wait! Don't Move to Canada!"

I wrote "unfortunate" because a month ago this title was a great marketing move by the book's author, Bill Scher. It succinctly described the hopelessness many Liberals felt in front of the Republican political machine. However, now that Democrats control both houses of Congress - a slightly more optimistic attitude prevails.

Even if you aren't as despondent as you were before November 7th, Wait! Don't Move to Canada! is still an important book for activists to pay attention too. Frankly, the 2006 election was only first step in what promises to be a long journey to return accountability and fairness to America .

Wait! Don't Move to Canada! is a concise map for that journey.

Like any good map, the book offers the suggestions on how to bypass the biggest obstacles in the way; such as how to take back the word "Liberal" so that it will have more positive connotations in the general public's mind, how to defuse the so-called "Culture War", and, a brilliant section on how to engage corporate media with positive re-enforcement.

My favorite was Chapter 2: "Promote the Three R's of Liberal Government", which explains how Liberals can counter the Republican elevator-pitch of "Less Government, Lower taxes and Family Values" by coming up with our own vision of a government that is based on Respect, Responsiveness and Representation.

As an added bonus, each chapter ends with a checklist on what the smart campaigner, blogger or activist should keep in mind. Wait! Don't Move to Canada! would be an ideal book for a political candidate to hand out to staffers BEFORE the next election.
